The world and his rabid political hack-dog are attacking David Cameron for reneging on his promise of a EU referendum.
Surely some mistake....last time I checked the Labour party was in power and it was their 1995 manifesto pledge to hold a referendum, which they ignored. That has subseqently taken us into the Lisbon Treaty via the failed constitution, and now Lisbon is EU law its impossible to withdraw from it without renegotiating with the other 26 states or withdrawing from the EU.
As much as I detest the twisted totali-socialist morass of legislation the EU has become, its original ideals of co-operation and free-trade are still valid. It makes leaving entirely a hard thing to do unless there is nothing left to salvage from the spirit of its creation.
In short, I don't envy DC's choices one bit at the moment.
On the other hand, you have to admire the Machiavellian nastiness of Labour in this case. Had they held a referendum and won, they would have deprived themselves of a very big stick to beat the Conservative party with. Had they lost, they would have lost authority, but also the route to further their own agenda. The middle road they have taken, ignoring the voice of the people they are meant to represent, has given them their victory AND laid the blame on someone else.
I am Jack's bile.
TD out.
